Roast Cooking

Here are some great tips for cooking a roast from one of the best poker playing chefs around, Astin!

One For The Elf: “Love Elf asked if I had any tips for prime rib. While I’m far from an expert, here are my tips:

- Make sure the roast is at ROOM TEMPERATURE before cooking it. Take it out an hour before you plan to cook. This is so it cooks evenly. Don’t worry, it’s not chicken, it’ll be fine.

- Get a digital roasting thermometer. The kind where you leave the probe in the meat and the readout attached by a wire and kept outside the oven. They’re accurate, and you won’t have to open the oven at all during the roasting (which is death for a roast). One of the best kitchen gadgets I own.

This week included a killer grocery shopping trip. I swear our receipt was like two feet long! So I should have most everything on hand no matter what I want to make for awhile. So tonight I think I’m going to make my lovely fiancee a yummy meal since he has to work all day.

I have a pretty good idea of what I”m going to make but I won’t post it here yet as I want it to be a surprise for him. I’ll post the pics, food and results tomorrow!

This was our first attempt at making wontons. We filled them with pork, shrimp, onion, bok choy, cilantro, soy sauce, garlic and a whole bunch of other little things. Jason was in charge of the actual frying procedure which he wasn’t excited about at first but he quickly realized it was easier to fry the little buggers than it would be to wait in the emergency room all night with me after I burn the heck out of myself!! Good choice on his part! All in all they were pretty yummy!

Three Little Pies

I made three little mini pies for Jason about two weeks ago. We were in the grocery store when we saw some great looking raspberries and just had to get them. I actually made the crust in my kitchen aid mixer which was sooo much easier than by hand and it came out great!

I would attach a picture but it seems that the pie picture was one of those lost when Jason moved everything to his new Mac computer. I should also mention that I’m writing my first blog post from my new MacBook, a very nice early birthday gift from my sweetie!!!

New Grill

Just ordered a new grill through Amazon. I love grilling and although our cast iron grill pan does an excellent job, it does get the place a bit smoky and is definitely too small at times. However, the new apartment building does not allow gas grills due to fire hazards. That’s a huge bummer. So as a compromise, I ordered a George Foreman grill for out on the patio. We had noticed a bunch of other of these things on peoples’ balconies and wondered what they were. The other night we were walking into Linens N Things and saw one sitting right out front! Thought about getting it then but decided to try and find a better price. Well, Amazon had it for a ton less and I get free shipping with my prime account. There’s a bit of a back order on it but with the amount of money saved that’s ok with me.
